I know it will be freezing. Do I need to be there really early? Can you bring alcohol? All those type of things? Also, a good brunch place on new years day in NYC?

Public drinking isn't allowed anywhere in NYC no matter what day it is. Some people sneak it into Times Square anyway. Expect that it will be freezing even though it may not be that bad. Getting there as early as possible is best if you want to see anything other then the back of someones head. People show up in the early afternoon. Like someone mentioned in another post about this, if you have to pee you are basically screwed. If you leave your section to find a restroom you CANNOT get back in. Some people end up peeing in the street (illegal) just so they don't lose their spot. If you want to drink, it's best to get drunk and pee as much as you can before you get there. Unfortunately, if you want to get there early for a good spot you'll probably sober up and be tired before midnight anyway.

Get there early to get a good spot! It is first come, first serve to the prime viewing areas. If you can, go down there the day before and figure out what you think is the best vantage point.
There are NO public bathrooms, so you are at the mercy of local stores and restaurants. No alchohol allowed!
Make sure you dress in warm layers - especially gloves and socks!

i won't be able to imagine why anybody might want to favor to do one of those ingredient ever. even after I lived in long island I by no potential went to cases sq. in New three hundred and sixty 5 days's Eve. Who must be with a gazillion drunken people making ideal fools of themselves? doesn't look like a lot interesting to me.

not worth it.
To get a good spot, you should try and get there by about 10am....
Expect to be coralled, searched, and freeze your butt off.
