depends on which borough of New York you want to rent a "flat" or apartment...Im assuming you mean New York City...NYC has five boroughs - Manhattan,Queen,Brooklyn,Bronx and Staten Island.
Manhattan - Expensive, small - 1 bedroom $1500 - to a whole lotta money
Queen - Good 1 bedroom $800 - $1600
Brooklyn - Decent 1 Bedroom $600 - $1300
Bronx - Decent 1 Bedroom $600 - $1200
Staten Island - Decent 1 Bedrrom $700-$1200

Way too much. The brokerage fee for most real estate agents alone is enough to scare off most folks. And good luck getting a flat in NYC without a broker. You can buy a home in Arizona for lower monthly mortgage payments than the monthly rent in 'the Big Apple'... Here's a link to the cheapest broker in the City:
