My dogs have tapeworm. We have to keep them outside until the tapeworm is gone. They think that they are being punished, is there any way that i can teach them that they are not being punished? (We already gave them the medicine, we just have to wait now.)

The vet gave us the medicine, and told us to keep the dogs outside so that the eggs don't get into the house, and so we can't get it.

I can't believe some of these answers! Even from people who claim to "know". Here's the poop...(no pun intended)... All tapeworms use an intermediate host...that is some other creature is needed before the worm can get into the host (your dog). You can't get it from contacting the dog's feces. The one reader is correct in blaming fleas... although different species of tapeworms use different intermediate hosts. It's just that the flea one is the most common one we deal with with pets. Tapeworms are also a different family of worms than all of the other type of worms that dogs get. So, normally used de-worming medicines do NOT kill tapeworms. The best choice is available at any vet clinic. Your dog will NOT pass the dead worm with the most commonly used medicine. The medicine will removed the coating on the worm that helps it resist digestion... so the worm will be disolved by the digestive process. Flea control will help your dogs not get the worms over and over again. They are not a human concern (unless you like to eat fleas).

You do not have to keep the dogs outside. You have no chance of catching the tapeworm. parasites have ideal hosts and the ones that are in dogs an cats can't survive in humans. Also the only other way to recieve a tapeworm would be some somehow ingest the feces of your dogs, and I don't think that will be happening.

Personal opinion, bring them in and treat them like normal. Also if you leave them outside and they get rid of the tape worm you'll never know. Your best bet is to keep them inside, walk them when they want to go out, and keep an eye out for the dead worm. Again, I stress that you can not catch a tapeworm from your dogs.

Did the vet tell you that you will have to pick up all feces in the yard to control the spread of tapeworms? The eggs can live in the soil for up to 7 years if no sunlight is on them. I don't understand why your vet told you to keep them outside, since they've been treated. My puppies had tapeworm when we got them, but they didn't spread to the other dog or cats that we have. If they have been treated, you should be able to bring them back inside. If you are worried about getting tapeworms, then wash your hands thoroughly after petting them, and don't allow them on the furniture.

First I ever heard of an animal having to stay outside while being treated for tapes.

Chances are, your dogs acquired them from fleas and your home needs to be treated, along with all pets. Treat the home and the pets and let the pets back into the home. Keep the yard waste picked up, keep flea preventative on your pets and all should be good.

Don't punish the dogs though by keeping them outside during treatment. Just pick up their waste and wash properly, all will be good.

Don't think you need to keep them outside as the medicine kills the worms. I have never heard of keeping them outside until the worms are gone. Check out this link.

go outside and play with them

never heard of keeping a dog outside until the worms are gone - unless your dog poops in the house alot and you dont clean it up?

are you sure it was tape worms - there are lots of kinds of worms dogs can get.. if a vet didint tell you it was tape worm how do you know?

anyhow the wormer will kill the worms so I still am confused why the dogs have to be outside?

To the poster Getemgang ,no need for rudness. Now to the op ,you don't have to keep your dogs out side . The medicine should work right away. The first time your dogs poo you should see dead tape worms.

You should not have to keep them outside.
But I understand the logic.
But anyway to your question.
Take them on long walks. Play with them. They might not understand why they can not come inside but they do not hate you for it.
It wont be long and then they can come back inside.

Really, there is no other way than to just give them lots of praise, attention, and love. While they are on the meds you don't want to give them any treats, only their normal food. Good luck, and you are doing the right thing! :o)
