I wish I knew!!! My 4 year old is a bear if I wake her up. Fortunately I have a day care in my home and she is able to wake up on her own in the mornings and after her nap. When I do have to wake her, on rare occasions, it's impossible to avoid the grouchiness and crying. All I can say is to try and give your 4 year old plenty of opportunities and enough time to sleep. Make sure the bedtime is early, no later than 8pm, and still try to provide a nap. My daughter sleeps from 1-2:30 and sometimes til 3 in the afternoon. If they are not getting enough sleep it's never going to get better. But honestly, my child gets it from me. I hate when people wake me up and I'm always in a bad mood if I don't wake on my own, so it may be something that is just part of the child's make-up. Good luck.

If your child is having a hard time getting up, maybe she's not going to bed early enough. I've always put my kids to bed earlier than the average parent and I've never had to deal with grouchy kids in the morning. You also get more time in the evening for chores, time alone etc. A four year old still requires alot of sleep, about 12-14 hours a day. I've always explained to my kids that when they are sleeping their bodies work hard at growing and staying healthy. My four year old sleeps from 8pm to 7am with a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. Good Luck!!

No matter how "gently" I try to get my son up he's grouchy if he has to get straight out of bed. Take an extra minute to go in start picking out clothes, putting away a few toys, she'll wake up but let her relax in the bed a few minutes and wake up all the way. Most adults don't jump up and start the day either they stretch and gets their minds going then roll out of bed in a couple minutes. She might not even want to talk so just smile and she shouldn't feel pushed. Good luck

Well, I can tell you how I would wake up my little ones and hope it helps you :)
Either my husband or I would (still do) go in their room, reach over rub their shoulder and tell them its time to get up and when they feel like it come on out of their room. Walk out the door, leaving it open an always look back tell them you love them. Might have to repeat it a few times but haven't had a grouchy wake-up yet ;)
Good Luck!!

First make sure she has had enough sleep. If she hasn't she's going to be grouchy no matter what you do. Then just be gentle. My dad used to sing in the morning to wake us up. I loved it, but my sister hated it. I usually just would gently call my child's name and kind of walk my fingers up their arms telling them to wake up and getting a little louder and a little louder until I was shaking their shoulder.

Nothing you can do. Some people even kids are just grouchy when they first wake up.

Make sure that the 4 year old goes to bed early enough the night before. Both of my children when they were that age woke up on their own happy children as long as they got enough sleep the night before. That way you dont have to be the bad person waking them up.

sorry but there is not much you can do that. Maybe instead of hovering over her and telling her to wake up may be you should try lying down with her and sing a little song. My son is 2 and if i pick him up early from daycare and he is still sleeping he is ALWAYS a grouch.
Hope this helps.

If she's like my almost 3 yr old son...You tap her and run!! No such thing as NOT waking her up grouchy!! LOL My husband and I do rock, paper, scissors to see WHO has to wake him up from his nap!! Or...I say...oh honey...can you wake up Joe..I have to go to the bathroom...and I RUN to the bathroom and shut the door and wait to hear his scream ..."I'm SLEEPING!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!"

Use a hand puppet (the washcloth kind are just fine)! First give him/her a name together, and a funny voice. Or you could enjoy making a sock version together! Then make him/her sound really happy and ask your 4-year-old to get-up to get ready for the day together!
example: "Hey your still asleep! I'm hungry can you eat breakfast with me! I don't want to eat alone!"
