I think you're trying to use a recovery disk, on SOME machines and SOME recovery disks, they check to see if the motherboard is from that manufacturer. So, it depends on how old you machine is. I KNOW that Gateway does this and E-machine was bought out by Gateway, so in that case you might have to purchase a disk.

But unless the machine was really expensive, why did you replace the motherboard? A cheap motherboard is about $100 plus labor and now plus 90 for an OS. So you're gong to have something like $250 or $300, (I'm assuming you were able to reuse the memory, processor, HD, etc). in an old computer and a new low end e-machine is $350 (with out monitor) $500 with a 15" flat panel.

I used to tell people to upgrade and fix, but now unless the machine is special and very expensive, I tell people to remove the old hard drive install it in the new machine and slave it out, then just toss the rest.

Good Luck
