My 5yr old really wants a video game this Christmas. My hub and I don't want to comply because he is only 5 and doing really good in school. We are afraid that if we get it for him, all the homework and chores will be put til "later".
We got a leappad leapster last Christmas, and he loves it. We know is not an actual video games, but he is learning a lot. He already does 1-2 grade level reading and math and he is only in Kgarden. Some people tell us we are tricking him into learning, and depriving him from some good fun. I would like opinions on this

I have dealt with the "l will do it later" and that is exactly what will happen.(my oldest got his first video game when he was 10 yrs old and he is now 16...I hate the things..lol) in my opinion I would wait until he is older and even then I wouldn't let him have free reign over it...limit the time he is allowed to play.it will save you a lot of stress and yelling...lol
why don't you look for more learning games for Christmas? it sounds like you have a very bright son....keep it going!
my 4 yr old has asked for a video game as well....my hubby told him it will be a cold day in he** before he will let that happen..lolol he has seen first hand what playing those dang things has done to the oldest....crappy grades, gaining too much weight and on and on. hope my experiences have helped.

Those are wonderful options that do not take the place of learngin, in fact, they enhance them. Learning can be fun and the leapster makes it fun for the child.

If your son likes it, forget what others say. If he is learning and can still get along well with others, then there is no problem.

Bottom line is that if you are ok with it, no one else opinion matters.

Oh- BTW, video games are not a necessity for children, just a luxery. And with the amount of games out there that are not child friendly, your child will not miss much.

Those learning games are approached in a child-friendly, mother approved type of way so you dont have to worry about bad things being placed in front of him.

There is nothing wrong with gaming especially educational games. So first of all if he likes the educational games and has fun learning, don't feel bad about it.

Games, educational or otherwise, like all things have an appropriate place and time. If you choose to provide games you should to make it very clear when game play is allowed, how long it's allowed, and where it's allowed.

My child can only play video games when all other things they need to accomplish for the day are done, if they have asked an adult for permission, and at this time only can play them in the company of a adult.
