It's just standard operating procedure (SOP). Health care standards extend to everyone. Manufacturers only sell presterlized needles to the health care industry. Can you imagine having to buy an autoclave to sterilize each needle?

Possibly the person doing the injection doesn't want to be infected by something if he should accidentally stick himself with the needle. Accidents do happen.

whoa, that's a good question... perhaps it's mainly for those administering the lethal injection. I worked in Healthcare for years and was responsible for logging inadvertent "needle stick" reports - it might just be a precaution against the good guy getting pricked with the needle.

ALL needles are sterilized. The manufacturers make them that way.

Because they are prepackaged that way.

We have standards for humane treatment and we have also had inmates strapped to the gurney with needles inserted who have received last minute stays of execution.

Very good question, I suppose it is just in case they have to stop the process, that way they can't be sued for using dirty needles, but who knows.

Seems ridiculous, I know. Maybe they're just trying to preserve whatever human dignity a human being has left regardless of his crime or the fact that he/she will be dead in a few minutes.

Have always wondered that myself. It isn't like they are going to be leaving from the death chamber and should be worried about infections,etc.
