AIG = American International (Insurance) Group

They are huge and they are everywhere: property casualty, life insurance, health insurance...you name it, they own a company or a subsidiary that sells it. They are branching out into all sorts of financial services, including securities brokerage and banking.

They got killed financially by 9/11, but they are so big that they have bounced back nicely. Also, ran afoul of the press because of accounting procedures that were deemed, at best, "irregular", but have come back from that, too. A lot of new people at the top are committed to righting the reputation.

Watch for them to make a real statement in critical illness insurance in the US; they have already done so with that coverage in Europe and Canada.

I used to work for the DMV in Kansas, and tons of people used it. It is associated with Travelers insurance, I think, if you have ever heard of that company.
