what is the differnce between buying a vacuum using watts verses buying one using amps and how do you calculate the difference to compare the two options.

They are two different ways of saying the same thing. If you take the amps number and multiply it by 120 volts you get power in watts. You can compare that with another power in watts number.

I am guessing that the companies that advertise amps are hoping you don't do that arithmetic to see how they compare.
