Technology can lead man to his own destruction if he does not know how to prevent misuse. Humanity to day is like the goat which is happy at being fed with good food to be taken to butcher one day

Some is necessary. First, we are one of the most non-specialized species on the planet biologically. It would be nearly impossible for us to live directly off the land sans technology.

If by necessary you mean, 'that which is needed for the continuation of life,' then spears and fire and blades are about all we need. However, this leaves little time for the leisure time required for the building of civilizations.

If by necessary you mean, 'to sustain ourselves in a style of living of which we are accustomed,' then computers are necessary, though not in the sense of EVERYONE or even every household having one; but businesses could no longer function without modern computer power -- imagine trying to do Coca Cola's accounting when they're in practically every country doing tens of millions of transactions a year under the laws of each individual country they have a subsidiary in -- and you quickly realize there's no way to do it by hand with any accuracy.

Comfort. Even as soft as our society has become. If electricity was to dissapear tomorrow, we would go back to food, clothing, and shelter. The only real necessities.
