Kite Girl, you are probably anxious or depressed. Insomnia of Anxiety Neurosis is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep. However, once asleep they sleep through. With Depression, the individual is able to fall asleep but wakes up in the middle of the night (2-3am) and is unable to fall back to sleep. In any case, I think your problem is a mental one. Consider seeing a neurologist or a psychiatrist to properly evaluate this problem.
But before you go see a doctor, have you tried using a soporific? (e.g. a cup of cocoa/chocolate drink with plenty of milk at bedtime.)

Being as physically and mentally active during the day and getting plenty of exercise. Try to get on a regular schedule. getting up at the same time of day regardless of how much sleep you got the night before. Don't take naps. If you feel you must take a nap..Keep it short. not more than 30 minutes. Physical exhaustion will definitely help you sleep and stay asleep.
Ive been through this myself.
Also, learn some meditation and relaxation techniques. This will help you keep your mind silent when you want to sleep with out all the running commentary. If you are in bed for longer than 30 minutes with out being able to fall asleep. Get up. Go to another room and read for a bit. Don't do anything stimulating..Like watching TV or eating. You may not be staying asleep due to a sleeping disorder...like sleep apnea. Go to your Doctor with this and give him every single physical detail no matter how small you think it is. As far as "sleep" medication. You may just need an anti anxiety drug instead. Especially if you cant "shut your brain off". Don't get discouraged. That will only cause the problem to get worse by worrying. Accept it right now. Don't fight it. Then incorporate some or all of the suggestions here. Relax.
Stress and worrying will almost always cause sleep disturbances. But see your Doc for any underlying medical conditions first.

High intense exercise.
Or try this mental method: Think of your favorite movie, and try to play it in your head... remember every scene and eventually your brain will become exhausted and just turn off.
