The Crusades were expeditions undertaken, in fulfilment of a solemn vow, to deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny.

Tyranny = n. A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)

Even though Crusade has a religious banner, it came up because of the moral and the political condition. Church was given the status of a State as it united all the regions.

So imagine, given the moral and political condition, if today a country were to be attacked meaninglessly, will it not be defended by the military of the country? This is just and fair.

That is exactly what happened in the Crusades to defend their territory from aliens.

How can you explain the feelings people had 100's of years ago? You just want to bash Christians because, you are not one (by the way neither am I). So you take one event and use it as the basis to describe a whole religion, because you think your religion is better.
Now you'll get people to write in and either give lots of positives about Christianity or you'll get comments like, " Islam is best religion".
So why don't you ask a real question instead trying to bait people w/ the same old s*it?

All the religions of the middle east are like that though, they just take turns killing each other if you really look at it. I mean if you want an example use a more modern one, like say Hitler, who's early education was Catholic and the source of alot of his anti semitism and general hatred of several of the other "inferior" peoples that he tried to exterminate in the concentration camps. Why do you think the Catholic Church was silent all through WW2 and only really dealt with the issue decades later, because they knew that their rhetoric bred alot of this hatred. Much of the information that verifies this historically is available readily of course on the internet, and even in Mein Kampf I'm sure Hitler shares some of his religious viewpoints, although it's been awhile and if you read enough on one person it all kind of melds together so that you remember the info but not necessarily the source.

The only explanation I have is that we are human.

We are more often wrong than right. That's why we need God's help so much. The Bible is misinterpreted every day and used to justify personal agendas and thoughts. It is so wrong, but we do it. That's called sin.

All we can do is try to not repeat history - truly read the Word and stay grounded in it and you ARE about love. God's love for us and how He wants us to treat each other is so different from what we actually do. All we can do is strive towards that goal.

Have you been reading some of my answers on here?--------you are someone who agrees with me!

The Crusades were started to get wealth and power for the church and nobles. Yes, the poor, uneducated, lowly soldiers went for religious purposes-the Pope promised them a place in heaven if they died for G-d. Does this sound modern day familiar?

Too often Christians do not show love---------it is a matter of threatening people-----------''believe as I do, or you are doomed to hell''.

oh how I love your intentional slaughter of history, the crusades were an attempt to preserve the catholic empire, while it was constantly being attacked by jews and muslims.

Might I recomend the book "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" that way you can get some of those idiotic notions out of your head.

Christians have their extremist too, who are'nt really commited to the beliefs of the teachings. True Christianity is a religion of love. Jesus emphasized this when he said, "And this a new commandment I give you, that you love one another, as I have loved you.". Unfortunately, the Roman Catholic church of old and many, if not most Christians today are hypocrital when they proclaim their Christianity.

christianity as taught by Jesus was a path of love....

there have been times when people obeyed Jesus, and times when they didn't..... their disobedience did not make Jesus wrong.....it made them wrong....God in scripture says, if you love me keep my commandments. It also says that people are not to honor God with their lips, and betray god with their actions....God rejects this kind of people

there were abuses by so called christians during the crusades.... but there were also worse abuses from the muslims who were attacking the Holy Land, and forcing Islam on people.

Both the catholic church and the muslims need to give back to the jews, what they took from them....

Sad isn't it that most wars are fought over a difference in religious beliefs?! I think that is part of why that time period is called the Dark Ages. There is no excuse. There are always going to be zealots in every cause or religion good bad or indifferent.

Jesus taught a thought system of love, tolerance and universal compassion.

Christianity could never quite accept this and has been trying to explain to us what Jesus actually meant to say for the past 2000 years. They could never quite swallow the loving message of Jesus.

It did not leave them with anyone to be better than.

love and blessings Don
