1. nail biting
sour nail polish, sometimes doesnt work sometimes does
2. thumb sucking
if the child sees other children his/her age not sucking their thumb the child often conforms to what they see kind of like peer pressure but not...
3. answering back
i still do it...good luck trying to get rid of it. You could tell him/her that its not nice to talk back to mom or dad and that if you continue doing it, you will get a time out. Sit them on a chair or in the bathroom (away from all their toys) for x amount of minutes depending on their age
4. lying
tell them that you see something happening to them when they are lying. children often assume that you know what they know. If they did something, you know about it and they dont have to tell you. They assume that you know....
5. nose picking
you could make up something and tell them that their nose will fall off or something. I see 50 yr old males doing that in traffic all the time...its quite disgusting. Children sometimes do that and bite their nails if they are bored...or insecure about something
Depending on the age I would try to find a way to occupy their time to get their mind off of the habits....

time out ...one minutes for however old they are. Gloves for hands to prevent nail biting and thimbsucking. Lying is a hard one, I would suggest taking away things, it really depends on how old. Nose picking, just say no in different style...like your finger will get stuck up there or whatever, he/she will stop over time just stick with it.
Goodluck

1&2, wear mittens, no access to nails or thumb.
3&4, how old is the child, under 4, ignore it, over 4, time out.
5, just tell them not to do it in public.

Nail biting and thumb sucking are signs of insecurity. Aswering back and lying are signs of lack of discipline. Nose picking, I don't think there is a child alive that does not do that.

nail biting, my dad dipped my fingers in jalepeno juice, sounds cruel but it worked....fast i might add
thumb sucking i dont know never dealt with that
answering back, get down in his face....not mean just so you know you hae his proper attention, and touch him, touching is key when communicating with a child
tell him that is unacceptable and why
and that if it happens again he wil be in trouble ( whatever punishment it is in your house)
lying, we tell our kids that god doesnt like it
but that may be different for you
other than god the same as above (talking back) should work as well too
and nose picking
i say leave it alone personally, im a grown woman and still pick mine...i dont think its a problem
but if it really bother you
explain that its gross for one and then my aunts and uncles used to tell their kids there was a little man up there that would bite the tip of their fingers off
it worked, but i try not to scare my kids too much
kids a scared enough as it is
also what i said about talking and getting to their level is really important no matter what youre talking to him about
and one final thing
as far as punishments go...just an idea
when i was growing up when i got in trouble that was worse than a butt chewing and not bad enough to spank, i had to stand on my knees
i was a time out
but it sucks
and i do it for my kids too when theyre acting up
i dont have to do it often
cause it works
its sounds really cruel but its not that bad
it doesnt hurt too much
its just a pain in the butt
just a thought

nail bitting = garlic
thumb sucking = mocking
answering back = ground them, remove their favorite toy/game.
lying = ground them, remove their favorite toy/game.
nose picking = mocking. If your child picks his nose at the table, everyone grab their dishes and leave him alone. Make obvious you're grossed out but with full mockery of the nose-picker.

for nail biting my youngest son did this.I found that a reward system and a lot of praise seemed to work with this.He also liked mummy spending time with him and I would give his nails a manicure when they were long enough.
