"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.'" (1 Cor 1 18-19). For two thousand years people have jeered at the cross, but it is our only means of salvation and should be honoured on Christian buildings. Yours is a good question and the day may come when the crazy authorities running our country might order the removal of crosses from churches. Let us hope that Christians will have the courage to refuse.

I think it's coming. I'd place money on it.
When i heard that the newsreader had complaints sent in about her wearing a crucifix, I was amazed!
As an Athiest I don't find any religious symbols offensive or upsetting. I understand that some people follow religion and some don't. In my opinion, until true hard concrete proof is found, I don't believe any religion has presidence over another.
Everyone is entitled to choose and follow a religion, but why should they then hide it?! All this hype about should Muslim women not wear veils, I think they should wear whatever they feel comfortable in and what their custom and religion allows them to wear, wherever they are, on TV or in general. This should apply to everyone. If a person feels secure and safe wearing a crucifix, they should be allowed to wear it, wherever they are!
I also have to agree with Marc K above, that some countries embrace the diversity of the religions and accomodate accordingly, whereas other countries it is illegal not to conform to the one religion and to follow another. Surely we have come far enough to realise not everyone follows the crowd and everyone is individual and different!

Don't confuse the removal of crucifixes from government buildings and the removal of crucifixes from private property.

That's not going to happen, ever. Which "certain minority" are you referring to? The people you refer to are the ones who evidently have anything to worry about, not the (so called) christian majority. The government and media have certainly convinced you haven't they?

It won't happen. There is a proper place for religious symbols, and that is in their respective churches. The US government, by virtue of separation of church and state, cannot ask that a church remove its religious symbol FROM ITS OWN PROPERTY.

I don't know, but I know a lot of churches are now being renovated to homes and even bars and restaurants. It is the sign of the times - religion simply isn't getting the crowds it used to.
I will answer your question with another - why are we in the UK so tolerant of other beliefs when in Saudi Arabia it is illegal to have any other form of church or place of worship?

good point, .... and unfortunately its probably going to happen as the world is slowly destructing itself into a conformist society where no one can express an opinion/ take a certain stance/ practise and conform to religion without being called a racist!

Ah ...imagine that .. a world where instruments of torture are no longer held sacred ... where crescents, stars, and sundry symbols are no longer motivations for killing ...
But don't worry. Reason is hardly likely to affect society as a whole.
