It depends on the decibel level which you are listening.

Decibel levels under 85 usually do not harm you. Normal conversation is roughly 60 decibels. Levels over 85 can cause hearing loss. Levels which drastically exceeds that level for a period of time (within hours) can cause hearing loss.

Therefore, if the music in your headphones is under 85 decibels, you may not cause damage. though the closer you get to 85 and listen fr a longer period of time, you can cause some damage. Music over the 85 decibel level WILL cause damage and the longer or louder you listen, the more you increase the risk of damage. At higher decibel levels, such as 120 and above, you can cause hearing loss instantly.

It does effect your hearing over time. Only when you listen to it loud.
