depends on your class, the poorer you were the more free you were about choosing your mate. Women of royalty/ upper class were generally used to gain land or make alliances. Middle class women had more say, but they would have a large dowry or bride price, which made them often victims of men who were looking to marry only for money. The lower classes had no hope of having money, so marriage for love was actually available to them.

Most of the marriages was arranged for them. They courted to find out each other and so most of the marriages was sad ones

Most women were betrothed if they were from a rich family. If you were poor, then I guess you were on your own.
