Because the Marines can't swim overseas.

Historically the Marines were basically soldiers on the way to a fight. In the old days a naval battle was a skirmish on wood. They evolved into the blokes that kept the peace on ship and ensured that the Captain wasn't Haney every time he had someone flogged. Yet if one asks a Marine they will say that they are aboard ship to ensure that the Navy does not get lost en route.

The navy is rather snobby and insists on it's own army and air force thus it has aviators not pilots and it has marines not army soldiers. The marines belong to the navy and are used for ship security and the usual role of assaulting beaches from the sea. Thus they are found on navy ships especially assault ships and carriers.

They are their for security purposes; unless, the ship is their transport. Large ships like Aircraft carriers use the Marine detachment on board for ship security to include armed guards for the Captain and that would include security against the crew i.e. mutiny.

The USMC was commisioned by mariners, and therefore thru the years.. have stayed in line with the Navy. basically- but way more to it than that. actually, marines go back a long time, they were elite soldiers and enemy boarding troops even 250 years ago.
I dunno...i think its cool at least to learn of their history, will they ever "break" off and be officially away from the Navy-? who knows...

it depends on the type of ship,,, the marines that are assigned to anything other than a Amphibious assault ships( LHD, LPD, and the such) are there as a security force, the same they have been for hundreds of years.Only the mission has changed, they are there for the security of the reactors. The ones on the Amphibious assault ships are being transported to a foreign shore to do there job.
