first of all need to be specific as to age group and if you are in a faith based or public program. also need to know length of time you want to run the theme based units.

some of the most popular ones center around holidays, seasons, and months.

my favorites are
colors (individually or in groups of two or three)
shapes(see above)
letters(see above)
numbers(see above)
fall, summer, winter, spring
days of the week, month of the year(often combined with numbers)
dinosaurs
families
holidays(dont just stick with the big ones--some of the others are just as fun --like dr seuss day, or soup month are lots of fun)
animals(pets, farm, zoo, wild---including babies and adults)
transportation(i can actually do them for a whole month--1st week land, then water, then air, then misc or combo)
sports
cooking
community workers/jobs/careers(best thing i ever did was invite a parent who worked for a local waste removal comp to bring a "CLEAN" truck for the children to examine)
safety
homes(both people and animal homes)
multicultural topic(differences in people, foods, homes, transportation, etc can be combined with other topics too)
choose a favorite book, poem, story then formulate a theme for it(one of my favorites is "Stone Soup")
find something that interests either you, your assisstant, or the children and you can formulate a theme

some may need to modified once you try them with your group and you can take out or add to them to fit your own style.

ive worked with ages from 6wks all the way to parent/child classes and themes work with all groups but you may need to scale back or increase activities depending on the group.
