1 year old Lab. Got her from the SPCA about 2 weeks ago. She came with kennel cough. She is just getting over it. She's still been coughing and gagging a fair amount, but eating and drinking well. Other than that, seems healthy, very active and social. Plays quite a bit. Late last night, tried to give her a treat- would not eat it. Had a poop accident in the house. This morning, she would not eat regular kibble or soft treat. Drank all of her water, and I refilled her bowl for her three times. Seemed like she hadn't drank in days (even though she has regular water available at all times). What's wrong? Is this normal?

First - congrats on your lab from the SPCA

Sounds as tho she's only been refusing food for just under 24 hours? If she has no other symptoms- I would wait a bit longer but maybe call the vet and see what he says on the phone. It could be that she ate something that doesn't agree with her, some dogs won't eat until whatever is inside "gets out". But it could be related to her medication for the kennel cough. Try offering her something really yummy and she what she does.

My dog did the same thing a couple months ago. He wouldnt eat and was having accidents in the house. The vet basically told me that dogs get stomach aches too so not to panic but try this before taking the dog to the vet. They had me feed him rice mixed with a couple of boiled eggs. It worked it was all he would eat for a couple of days and then he was back to normal. This worked for me but i would still contact the vet if I were you. =O )

WHEN MY FRIENDS PUPPY HAD KENNEL COUGH THEY TOLD HER TO GIVE THE DOG COUGH MEDICINE TOO. ASK THE VET WHAT KIND IS SAFE.

MAKE THE DOG SOME COOKED HAMBURGER WELL DRAINED COMBINED WITH RICE. GIVE A CUP FULL EVERY 3 TO4 HOURS.(HEAT THIS UP) THIS BLAND DIET HELPS SOMETIMES WHEN THEY ARE SICK. ONLY DO THIS FOR A FEW DAYS AND RE-TRY DOG FOOD

IF YOUR DOG GOES WITH OUT EATING FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS THEN TAKE HER BACK TO THE VET.

CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW DOG!!

Where you feeding her puppy food?

I remember our lab ate puppy food until he was one year old and just stopped eating and wouldn't even touch his food. We gave him adult food and he started eating like normal.

Maybe it's time to switch her food type/brand.

If that doesn't help, please check with your vet.
