It is not a double standard. I am not a Muslim, but the prohibition sounds a lot like the Ten Commandments, followed by Christians and Jews, prohibiting "graven images." There is no prohibition about other types of statues or images in these religions, either. It is one of the unifying tenets of all these faiths.

Muslims throw stones only to observe the commandment of Allah & the teachings of Prophets ie. ( Adam, Abrham, Isaac, Solemen, Moses, Jesus & Muhammad ( Peace upon on all of tem). This ritual actually remind us to be stand against evil it has very psylogical effects on human behaviour. Regarding if a pillar can represent Shatan why a idol cannot represent Allah is amazing. Shatan is a creature while Allah is a Creator. Creature
can be represented thru another creature just as Shatan thru pillars but Creator Cannot. Creatures has many shortcomings While Creator is Superior he has not any shortcoming. If u r going to represent Allah with idol it means u r reprenting a supirior one with the inferior one how it can be justified can u represent King with any slave. There is not any resemblance of Creator with the Creature . I hopes u understand my pointof view.

How can God be represented in a form of an idol? R U implying we R infidels? God is Allah in case U didn't know. Satan can be represented in a form of a garbage bin, who cares. We throw stones symbolizing our refusal to listen to him. He is the source of all evil, draws humans to sin. This is what Satan told God when God ordered him out of heaven (when Adam was created) Satan said: "I will seduce all humans to sin" God replied: "you will never have power over my faithful followers". This is what we believe in since you are asking Muslims.

If they want to throw stones at a representation of Satan, then that's fine by me. That is their way, and their right to worship in their own way - as Christians, and other religions also have the right to do. I believe it is better to throw stones at stone pillars than at people and at their way of life!

The reason that idols are not allowed is that people actually worship the idol as a seperate God. The act of shirk( ascribing partners to Allah) is one of the worst sins in Islam. It is also considered very insulting to ascribe physical bounds and limits to what Allah is or looks like.

Pilgrimage and throwing stones , is a bit
like playing DOUBLE JEOPARDY in my
humble opinion ...

The satan is always secondary in virtually all religious imagery, except in satanic worship. Feel free to pick up your stones and throw them at it.

well they dont exactly represent satan, they represent ur sins which were all in any case instigated by satan, people get very vindictive when they image it to be satan himself they are stoning...bigger sins for one pillar and so on...it isnt a double standard :)

Maybe its insulting to be represented by an idol.... and they want to insult Stan ...

[I deliberately left the first "a" out there because it amuses me sometimes to call him Stan.]

I don't recall reading this in the Koran and I think it is only tradition.
