My little boy has been dry for a few months now during the day, however has trouble when we are out & there are no facilities near by.
I always get him to 'try' before we leave the house, but as we live in a rural setting it is sometimes a problem (resulting in wet pants!).
Any advice or tips would be very welcome
Lots of love Kirsty. xxx

I don't want to put him back in a nappy as he may regress.

I'd avoid giving him liquids for a little while before you leave the house and until you're ready to head home. It'll make it less likely that he'll have to go. it's the same pricipal thats used with night time accidents.

Stop if there is a facility thats available, even if he hasn't said he has to go yet.

keep a spare change of clothes and some wipes handy. in case there is an accident.

Take a potty with you, you can get ones which are small and light enough to fit in a carrier bag. Make sure you take a few pairs of extra pants and trousers so you are prepared for accidents and keep asking him if he wants to use the potty at regular intervals. Whatever you do don't shout at him or make him feel bad if he does it in his trousers, just ignore it and remind him to tell you when he needs to go. He'll soon get the hang of it.

use a pull up when out and no facilities near by. this will help with the wet clothes which is very embarrasing for a child.if you constantly ask him if he needs to go he wont regress. my son is 3 and trained but when we will be out for long periods of time he wears a pull up and he hasnt wet but once.that happened cause he fell asleep. try a small potty in the car too. also avoid going to places with out restrooms even grocery stores have them now. encourage your son to tell you sooner he has to go too

You could put him in those pull up disposable nappies. How about when you are travelling you ask him if he wants to go to the toilet? Then if he says he does you can find a convenient place to pull over. As he is a little boy he/you can pull his little willie out and he can wee in the bushes. Try taking him to the supermarket toilet before you begin your shop. If he want to go during your time in the store, leave your trolley in an aisle and take him to the toilet and return to your trolley afterwards.

My suggestion would be, if you have a mini van, get him a potty just for the van. It helped me a lot to have it right there when u hear those words, "i gotta potty". And if you frequent a mall or shopping areas make sure you know every route to the facilities, for faster runs....hope this helps.

you are quite right not to put him back in nappies.
everyone has the same problem when potty training...where the hell in the loo...
for my children i used to take with me a travel potty, it is a basic potty frame that folds flat and you have a bag with a pad in the middle of it, bit like a nappy sack, you just tie up and throw away.

It was a god send

The site below has them for about £7

been there done that!! welcome to the joys of potty training!!

mothercare sell a great tommie tippee travel potty that folds down almost flat and has a bag to carry it in.

blooming marvellous sell a great product called a piddle pad!
it's a square piece of material with a waterproof backing that goes in the car seat or pushchair and if he does have an accident it stops the car seat or pushchair from getting soaked.

Have you tried keeping a portable potty in the car? Or making sure you can get to a toilet every 30-45 minutes for him to *try*? It might not hurt to keep a pull-up, in case its a long trip. Otherwise, just take him to the toilet ALOT and he should be ok.

Keep a childs potty and wet wipes in the trunk? So you can just stop on the side of the road and let him go.
