I own a heavily timbered piece of land, and in spare time I can clear brush and 5-10 year old saplings, or I could join a karate class.. which would be more effective as a workout routine?

Good Point Mindy...but the trees are overgrown, and so tightly packed together you can't walk through the branches, gatta thin the herd so the others can be healthier...and no, I'm not going to replant on the 44 acres what needs to be cleared, otherwise I;d be cutting down more trees later.

I think Karate class is a better workout, assuming you are working out hard. Clearing out trees and brush will probably burn more calories and work different muscle groups. The reason I say it will burn more calories is because you typically don’t just clear brush for and hour, you spend and entire afternoon or weekend working. Karate is by far a better whole body workout. Do both and look at the brush clearing as an extension to your overall fitness routine.

This depends on the karate school and the trees....no straight answer on this one.
In the long run I would say that true karate training is a better workout. Karate safer than chopping down trees. It is easier on the joints, plus you are learning something while you work out.
Also, if you use a chainsaw it is much less of a workout. But if you use a hand-saw you will burn more calories but destroy your shoulder.

well karate is good for cardio and if you do pushups, situps, and other exercises like this, then strength too, along with a good way to burn a lot of calories in only a hour of class. but cutting down trees is good for strength and can make you get a leaner body by burning calories. i think that a short period of time for both would be a perfect workout routine to stay healthy.

Well in Tree cutting you use an Axe to cut down a solid tree.
In Karate you break a one inch thick piece of pine that has been scored down the middle.

The karate would give you a good cardio workout, while the tree-chopping would be a good strength workout. Either way, just avoid the hot dogs.

Cutting down trees is better upper body excercise. Karate is a better whole body workout.

The better exercise would probably be cutting trees. However, how long will that last. I suggest doing both. It would give you both structured exercise, self-disipline, and self-defense skills, plus some good cardiovascular work-outs and a clean woods.

i hope you are going to replant those trees, the world is going through global warming you know.
martial arts is not just about physical strength, it is about spiritual strength. Are you happy to be knocking trees down for no reason? If you truly believed what you do in martial arts you should know better than to mess with nature.

work those muscles, cw!
just pointing out that in cutting and clearing brush, you will devote more time (therefore more exercise?) into doing it, and also you can do it on your own timetable, when it suits you, as opposed to being under a rigid schedule a karate class might require. after all, you're busy.
have you ever seen a chubby lumberjack?
