your hands should be slightly ahead of the ball . to allow your hands to "zip" thru at impact. also ball position is quite important . with the longer irons i.e. 2 , 3 etc you have a wider swing arc so the ball should be opposite inside of left heel and gradually move it slightly towards the centre of your stance as you progress thru the irons , so that when playing a 9 iron or wedge the ball should be roughly middle of your stance . golden rule is never swing too fast or try and hit the ball too hard take an extra club and don,t get involved in macho duels with your playing partners !! if he hits a 7 there,s no shame in hitting a 6 as long as it get,s the required result . you have a bag of 14 clubs , and it,s irrelevant whether you hit the green with a 9 or a 7 the score on the card is what matters ! enjoy !!!!

It would depend on the situation, and the lie that you have to work with. If for instance your ball is in the rough facing a hugh bank and the bunker is on the other side then you will want your hands further forward to raise the height of the ball on exit thus bringing the ball over the bank and onto the green or fairway whichever. Now having said that the opposite will be the case if you have a shallow lie and just want to chip it out onto the green. you move your hands back and then strike the ball thus the height is not there and the ball travels forward more freely. We are only talking a few inches at best forward from the club head and not feet. Let the club do the work thtas what they are made for. The correct iron will also be required. Dont always go for the PITCH, SAND or WEDGE try something different like a 9iron or even a 7iron depending on how far you want the ball to travel. Try it and let me know how you get on. www.eastangliangolfer.com

The only way that could be determined is with video footage that could be slowed down to determine where the hands are at impact. Focus more on where the divot starts in relation to where the ball was. The divot should start at the ball and should be cut in-line with the ball's flight.
A high, straight flying shot with good distance is the other determining factor.
You should not be focusing on how far your hands are ahead of the ball!

It depends on which Iron you are using. Different irons have different length shafts, therefore require different standing positions in relation to the ball. It also depends on the lie of the ball, whether you are on an up/down/side-slope. I recommend buying a good coaching video and plenty of driving range practice.
