There are 1.8 million one-parent families in Britain and they care for nearly 3 million children. About nine out of ten lone parents are women. The median age for a lone parent is 35, and at any one time only 3 per cent of lone mothers are teenagers.

Lone parenthood is now often a stage in the life-cycle, lasting on average around five years. Lone parents from black or minority ethnic communities make up 12 per cent of all lone parents compared to 7.9 per cent of the UK’s population.
Children in one parent families

In 2004, one in four dependent children lived in one parent families. This was an increase from 1 in 14 in 1972.

As for 2010, well the figure is rising - so it's anyone's guess. Probably around 2.2 million....

Bloody thousands by the look of our town centre. You can tell them, usually they sit in MacDonalds smoking at talking on their mobiles. They have a brat sitting in an expensive push chair. They also get a taxi to and from Tesco or Asda, and are always moaning about how hard life is.Their houses are usually pig stys, and they expect the rest of society to pick up the bill. What ever you do don't mention work to them - it's taboo!
