I'm sure that in time we probably will expand the tunnel net wok to cover a vast part of the world, the trouble is the Tectonic Plates. You cant build a tunnel through something that is, or has the potential to shift.
But other that that the main limitation will be the cost. I mean the channel tunnel looses millions every year.

Nope, tectonic plate movement would cause the tunnels to either become mis-aligned and/or change the required length of the tunnel. in addition, filling the tunnels with air (either for use in combustion for the vehicles) and/or for the passengers over such distances is impossible (by the time the air is pumped from one side to the middle of the tunnel, all the oxygen would be already used).
But also why would you want these tunnels? The cost of construction would be mind-numbingly huge and if you were to drive from the UK to the east coast of America in this hypothetical tunnel it would take over 36 hours of solid driving, and a high speed train would still take around 18 hours!

The surface of the earth that we refer to as "land" is actually the highest points of several individual pieces of material called Tectonic Plates. Over the course of many (thousands? millions?) of years, the plates move in relation to each other.
Therefore, to build tunnels within a "plate" is okay since the entire tunnel would be contained and the end positions would be fixed relative to each other.
However, building tunnels across "plate" junctions would not be feasible, because of the incessant relative movement of the plates themselves. What makes it worse is that the actual movement direction is not predictable over the long (thousand year) term!

sure they can if you got the money. your not catching me in the middle of the atlantic ocean when that baby springs a leak, OMG, what a way to go. unless i had a VW, then i would float to the surface 10,000 ft. above.

No because of tectonic plates. I guess inside a plate its possible?

Yes anything is possible. If the world was united and shared it wealth and workforces, it would probably be built already.
