Lectio Divina is Latin for “spiritual reading” and represents an early monastic technique of prayer which continues in practice though less widely, intended to achieve communion with God as well as providing special spiritual insights and peace from that experience. It is a way of praying with Scripture that calls one to study, ponder, listen and, finally, pray from God's Word.
History
Lectio Divina was first expressed in the year 220 AD. It was found that to read the Bible profitably it is necessary to do so with attention, consistency and prayer. The systematization of “spiritual reading” into four steps dates back to the 12th century. Around 1150, Guigo II, a Carthusian monk, wrote a book entitled “The Monk’s Ladder” (Scala Claustralium) wherein he set out the theory of the four rungs: reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation. In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI stated, “This is the ladder by which the monks ascend from earth to heaven.”
Method
Lectio is typically practiced daily for one continuous hour. A selection from the Holy Scriptures is chosen ahead of time, often as a daily progression through a particular book of the Bible.
Time
Selecting a time for lectio divina is important. Typical methods are to pray for one hour in the morning, or to divide it into two half-hour periods, one in the morning and one in the evening. The key is to pre-select the time that will be devoted to the prayer, and to keep it. Using the same time every day leads to a daily habit of prayer that becomes highly effective.
Place
The place for prayer is to be free from distractions. This means it should be isolated from other people, telephones, visual distractions, etc. Some find a religious icon to be helpful. The same place should be used for lectio if possible, especially as one first begins to practice it. Familiarity with a location reduces the possibility of distraction away from the prayer. Some practitioners conduct other devotions, such as praying before the Catholic Eucharist, as a preparation for Lectio Divina.
Preparation
Prior to reading, it is important to engage in a transitional activity that takes one from the normal state of mind to a more contemplative and prayerful state. A few moments of deep, regular breathing and a short prayer inviting the Holy Spirit to guide the prayer time helps to set the tone and improve the effectiveness of the lectio.
Once the stage is set it is time to begin the prayer. There are four phases of the prayer, which do not necessarily progress in an ordered fashion. One may move between different phases of the prayer very freely as the Spirit guides.
The Four Moments
Lectio
Read the passage several times.
Meditatio
Reflect on the text of the passage, thinking about how to apply to one's own life. Gravitate to any particular phrase or word that seems to be of particular import. This should not be confused with exegesis, but is a very personal reading of the Scripture and application to one's own life.
Oratio
Respond to the passage by opening the heart to God. This is not primarily an intellectual exercise, but more of the beginning of a conversation with God.
Contemplatio
Listen to God. This is a freeing oneself from one's own thoughts, both mundane and holy. It is about hearing God talk to us. Opening our mind, heart and soul to the influence of God. Any conversation must allow for both sides to communicate, and this most unfamiliar act is allowing oneself to be open to hearing God speak.

While I am an atheist I understand my bible good, and feature it inside arm's duration of this pc, along side my different key reference works. I mostly examine some thing in it 2 or 3 instances every week whilst I'm lively right here, however it isn't a "studying" ebook now, even though I've learn it correct via greater than as soon as. From the bible, studying it's naturally no longer a demand of salvation (The first new release of Christians did not have it!), however any Christian could say that studying and finding out it (no longer fairly the identical factor) ought to be a well factor.

Well find the messages in your heart. Awaken to just how the world is and let that be a match for the meaning of how things are in the Bible. Anything that when you gather with people who don't just say one sentence about it, seem to agree, is probably or probably has some truth. John 14 12 tells us to discern Jesus and to see him as he is in heaven, better than he was on earth in order to do greater works. You can see how the dominant views and teachings of the Bible have gotten mankind to where they are today. If you want a different life from your conclusions of the Bible, you will have to seek some of it. It probably won't happen by pure accident. Being of an accord is from the heart, not from any organization on paper. So yes, gather two or more in heartfeltedness and there will be those who will not gather because they are afraid. You must encourage their communication to get to the bottom of things. The Bible is written to help the downtrodden. So as you meet those whom you have felt the downtroddeness in them with the most exhibited love from them and you can agree with their hearts, you have something to build upon.....something closer to the truth and more functional than what you have been taught so far. There are many who are on this journey with you, perhaps seemingly apart from you, but God at this time in history has predestined for the awakening to begin and for those who awaken to question their new states as you will. Keep up the good work!

I read the Bible every day and also follow a daily devotional. Before you read pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding of the the material you are reading. Sometimes to draw more revelation of the scripture it is good to meditate on it and expect the Holy Spirit to give you further understanding. If you can hear from the Holy Spirit He can direct you to attend certain courses or read certain books or listen to certain preachers and teachers. All the problems we have in churches are because churches are run based on men's ideas. Presently I believe the Lord Jesus Christ is truly Head of very few churches. When churches are really run with the Headship of Lord Jesus Christ with all church leaders truly and wholly submitted to Him the prophesied church without spot or wrinkle or any other blemish would emerge. It is in the Word and it will surely come to pass Amen.

Try to read what it actually says and keep in mind the culture of the time, instead of cherry-picking the good parts and rationalizing away any bad parts. Try to put the story into a neutral context before trying to decide if it is a good story or not.
A study was done in Israel, where kids were told the story of Jericho being sacked. The kids were asked if they thought it was good, were neutral about it, or thought it was bad what happened. About 76% of the kids said it was good and gave religious reasons for why Jericho should be sacked.
A control group was given the same story and the same questions, except that Jericho was changed to an ancient chinese city and the religious background was taken out. In this case, the kids were only 7% in favor of the sacking, and the vast majority said it was bad.
Most people read the Bible with rose colored glasses. They want to interpret everything in the Bible as "God doing good things". To really read the Bible honestly, you have to take off those glasses.

I have read the bible and old testment , I have studied their history too , wish I could able to figure out any of the following :
- What was the original language of the Bible? (Hebrew? Aramaic? Koine Greek?)
- Why does the Catholic Bible has seven (7) more books than the Protestant Bible?
- How can Jesus be the "Only Begotten Son" of John 3:16? When in Psalms 2:7 David is God's "Begotten Son?"
- Would a 'Just' God, a 'Fair' God, a 'Loving' God -- punish Jesus for the sins of the people that he called to follow him?

I read the Bible every day,1-3 chapters. It is the first thing I do after prayer early every morning.
I have recently found a book called "Into Thy Word" by Richard Crejcir. It is a work book course that takes about 15 weeks to complete. I will be trying it soon. Just type -into thy word- into your search bar, you'll find it. It cost about $15. Okay the website is www.silaspartners.com the course teaches you how to outline the scripture for personal study or teaching. It looks good to me.

Unless you strictly insist on the bible, try reading "Rational Spirituality" available on the Dhaxem website.
Convyed only in February 2006 from the Source, it already is a major force amongst the genuine followers of Christ with guts to think beyond the official dogma.
