I am in paris for a few more days (4 days). I want to go out of paris to see some local rustic culture and lifestyle. Are there any festivals this week or special/unique activities? I like to do photo-documentaries.
the only limit is time. I figure if I stay close to paris I can spend more time in one place or visit several places as opposed to going further away. I am not ruling out options yet.

If you want to see local culture and lifestyle, it's better to go on saturday or sunday, when there is a market. During the week, I'm afraid you'll find small town around Paris without animation.

In the north suburbs, about 30 kms of the center of Paris, you can find some pretties smalls towns around L'Isle Adam (like Nesles-la-Vallée or Auvers-sur-Oise).

In the south, you can take the RER B to Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, a small town located in a regional natural park wich is very very interesting.

The best is to have a car to go there.

Have a good trip !

If you like chateaux...there are plenty in the vicinity...
Besides the main ones at Versailles, Vincennes and Fontainebleau..Each of these three has a magnificent park surrounding it...
There is a lovely chateau at Rambouillet, one at Maintenon, another at Anet, all southwest of Paris.
You could visit Père Lachaise Cemetery, where many very famous people are buried. With it's melancholy beauty, it's a great place for photographs
I don't know what events are taking place at this time of year...

I don't know about festivals, but a fairly short journey south by train will bring you to fontainebleau which I've really enjoyed visiting in the past - amazing palace, forest etc. read about it on wiki...
