How you record will tell you if it is illegal or not, if you are recording when you are driving then it would be illegal. Recording an accident may be helpful but you have to consider the chain of evidence, most police departments take pictures of an accident scene, you can always use it for a news agency. Other thing to consider is some people do not like someone pointing a camcorder at them. Its all a matter of judgment.

As long as the surveillance is not directed surveillance, or you are not holding the camera, IE not in proper control. My only word of warning is that the whole tape would need to be seized by the police if it was used as evidence. The tape would be viewed in it's entirety and therefore anything could be used as evidence, so make sure that your driving is squeaky clean. That's how that MET officer was done. Because an incident happened and the tape was seized and whilst reviewing the tape other offences were apparent.

Yea if you recorded there face of the license plate, then it could be considered slander of some kind so be careful. Also i really hope you were not holding the camcorder while driving, cause that will work against you if you were involved in the accident so make sure you are careful. Now if you wintnessed the whole thing it should be ok.

Well they have cameras on busses now, as some idiots actually try to cause an accident with a bus and then claim vast injuries etc. Insurance fraud.

That sounds like a great idea to me... I'm all for it. There are some awful drivers out there and just think how much time could be saved on insurance claims and stuff like that?
Is it legal folks?

I agree with cynical si you are allowed to take pictures provided it is not used for monetary or illegal use. Think how many cctv cameras are in the uk.

If it is illegal, it shouldn't be. A driver who obeys traffic laws will have nothing to fear, in fact, it might make road use safer.

Shouldn't think so. Be careful though. If a curiouse police man asks if they can have a look, you might find all of your bad habbits being used against you.

I don't see how it could be illegal, cops have them in their cars, and here in Ohio, one cop was fired because he used the camera to help him look up some girls skirt.
