temptations? Yes, it is one of their most useful tactics.
Religion uses emotional manipulation to gain and keep its converts. The idea of temptation is people are such scum that can't resist all the evil forces trying to get us to give up our souls. If you can make people feel bad enough or guilty enough, you can more easily get them into the pews. This is because religions not only sell temptation as the cause of people screwing up, but they also sell the solution which is feeling sorry for being tempted and telling their invisible guy as much.
If left to our own devices, we feel sorry for things we do quite often, and we try to make amends for such. Religion spreads the false line that they somehow own the process.
Again, it is just more emotional manipulation on their part.

That is a bit hypocritical don't you think, when there are so many priests getting charged child sex offences.

James 1:14-16 (King James Version)
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
