They make WONDERFUL pets in the right home! They do not like alot of chaos so if your kids are very loud and boisterous a Whippet is likely to get pretty nervous.
They will get along fine with other dogs. Some people do have them with cats, but I would not trust them around cats, rabbits, etc. They have a very high prey drive and it is hard, if not impossible, to train it out of some of them. That said, some do live with cats.
They looked "blah" to you because they are generally reserved towards strangers. They are not the type of dog who is going to be all wiggly at the sight of someone they do not know. Towards 'their' people they are very sweet, affectionate, and funny.
Whippets are also very smart, but not as trainable as most breeds. They were bred to hunt without constant direction from their handler and will make their own decisions. Their high intellegence and low trainability would really bother some people. I love this about them and if you have Whippets you need to have a sense of humor about it.

i think whippets make great pets. if you introduce it as a puppy to a family, it will guard you and your children over it's own life. there was a family, there house was being robbed. the guy robbing the house heard some movement. he went upstairs. the family was in the bedroom. he opened the door and aimed the gun at the mom. the whippet gumps up biting the man's right hand and nearly rips the thumb off. the man kills the whippet and runs away. true story, saw it on the news.

I can vouch for whippets and greyhounds. They're great pets and very low maintenance. The whippet we used to have was great with kids, even when they tormented him. Also, he didn't like going outside if it was cold, so was never dragging me out for walkies and stuff. He'd even play in the garden with the pet rabbit, I guess on reflection he must have been gay!
Annette Crosby (Victors wife in One Foot in the Grave), has loads of ex racing greyhounds around the house, she swears by them!!

They're OBVIOUSLY enjoyed by MILLIONS!!!
Just like EVERY breed-NOT for everbody-which is WHY there are nearly200 BREEDS to choose from.
Whippets are *relatively* low-maintanence, DON'T need a "big yard",CAN be TAUGHT to leave small animals alone but CAN/WILL be GREAT hunters if allowed /encouraged.( I used to hunt w/one!)
Thin skin & coat -feel the cold.
Hey,mj......next? LOL!

They do but they need lots of exercise a large yard etc, If you don't have time/energy or a large yard they get bored and can get into things.
