A subwoofer only plays low freq / bass. These freq have very high energy that tend to vibrate anything around it at high volumes. Try a dance music with only the subs on, you should hear nothing than 'bum-bum-bum'. Depending on how low an how loud the subwoofer can play and how you set it up (and the played material), at some point you won't hear anything other than rumble and cracking. That's because human ears are not too sensitive at low freq.

A sub woofer does give out vibration but it all gives out all the low noises. If you just connect the sub woofer up and not the others, you should be able to hear the sounds.

I would do what Patricia suggests! Good idea! Other than that, play a bassy CD and see if it works. By "sound" I take it you mean the full range. A sub will only really output bass, midrange and higher will not really play through a sub.
