Dude, the religion in question would be a detail worth mentioning. Believe me, this WILL affect the answer.

Please update your answer with more info: what religion? What subsect, if relevant? What do you want to / not want to achieve? (eg, do you want to score / make long term friends / have happy talk with one-use friends)

Going in a retreat can change lots of things about you. I had retreats before and it helped me to be more open and to be more myself. Just go there and go with the flow. Be yourself, feel every moment and don't be afraid in making conversations 'cause you will all feel (spiritually) equal there. You'll feel like a new person after the retreat. Enjoy and Good luck!

Well 2 lame ones come to mind, the first is easy - "So do you come here often?"

The second is a joke.

A prosperous and successful builder goes to his priest for confession and goes in the confessional and says "Forgive me Father for I have sinned"

The priest says - "What is your sin then?"

"Well Father - you remember my daughter Angela? How when she was married, I built her a bungalow?"

"Yes" replies the priest, "It was very generous of you."

"Well Father, it was all stolen materials" says the man.

"What - all of it?" exclaims the priest. "This will mean a pretty big penance" he continues.

"Wait Father" the man continues, "There's more. You remember my other daughter Anne-Marie?"

"Yes" the priest says "A beautiful bride"

"Well" says the man "You have to treat them all equally, so I built her a bungalow too"

"What" says the priest in shock. "You don't mean that was all stolen materials as well?"

"I'm afraid so Father"

"Well" says the priest, "This will take some thought. Something like this requires quite a serious penance. Tell me do you know what a retreat is?"

"No Father" the man quickly replies "But if you show me the plans I can build it!"

the way i know religious retreats, it's supposed to give you some calm moments of reflection, you know, like renewing your relationship with the super being of that religion. ergo you need some quiet. and i would think the others who go there would want some quiet too. if you don't start a conversation, it won't be that out of place.

You could always start with a joke. Why was Jesus so popular? Because he was hung like this, (then you put your arms out to the sides). It's a dick joke, just in case you didn't get it right off.

you know the retreat will be lame, so have that as your convo starter. just go up to a girl and say something like, "oh, this is gonna suck so bad." and see what she says.

Open with, "Hi my name is _____, what's yours." Basic conversation starters are things like
Where are you from
What church do you from
What do you do for fun in your free time
