The name "cup" cakes is believed to have developed because of the use of the practice of measuring the ingredients using a standard-sized cup instead of the previous practice of weighing the ingredients.

Also, cupcakes are usually frosted, and muffins are usually bare.

To a kid a muffins and a cupcakes are the very same thing. We adults on the other hand sophisticated the outcome by changing batters which of course makes the difference on what are cupcakes and what are muffins. THE BATTER IS THE DIFFERENCE. Cupcakes are made of cake batter while muffins are made of different batters such as corn, wheat bran, blueberry, nut, dates, fruit, and other ingredients. What makes them the same is their shape, their different kinds, thier sizes, the degree they are cooked at, the time they take to bake, and like you said the pans used. Capiche?
