You could have a custom belt/uniform made for them. Order one on the internet from Japan and have his/her name embroidered in Japanese :)

Hmm f they take Karate, pay for some of their lessons or testings, buy them a new GI to practice in the really heavy ones are nicer for events because they look so crisp and snap when you punch. Get a gym bag and fill with spa type things for after workouts.you could also include fighting gear, mouthpieces, chalk for their hands and feet so they don't slip on the mats like gymnast use. Find a special person that this person admires to give a private lesson. Get their favorite movies on DVD..

Depending on the martial art being studied, i would have to say something like traing pads, gloves and shin guards are probebly the most important things to have in your kit bag. Also if the person is a male of the species then a groin guard will also be very welcome, if not then a breast guard will be the order of the day, both found in any good martial arts studio shop or Argos if not.
