According to Christian doctrine, if I simply don't believe in God, but am otherwise a decent person who has committed no grave sin in my life, I will stand in Hell next to Hitler and Jeffrey Dahmer.

Us lowly humans understand that punishment must fit the crime. A speeding ticket doesn't warrant execution. How can a just God not see this?

Remember the first sin? Picking a piece of fruit that they had been told not to eat. Now who thinks that is a great sin? But the underlying evil was simply disobedience to God and what did that one little sin do? It brought death on all mankind, it created the separation from God and thus the need for a place of punishment, It corrupted the whole universe, it brought a corrupted natural realm with thorns and thistles and on and on. In God's eyes sin is much more of an awful thing than man can realize. The word confess in the Bible means to "say the same thing". Confession come over our sins when we begin to say the same thing about our sin as God says about them. When God sees sin, He see His Son litfed up on a cross, and when we flipppantly say to God "I'm sorry" we really haven't confessed at all. In God's eyes "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." The problem isn't that the punishment needs to fit the crime, but that the crime warrents the punishment.

Yes God is the Most Just. Since U don't believe in Him, then U won't buy any of this.
What is the speeding ticket? What does God have to do with human legislations?

A very good question. Here is my take: God has made it part of our own soul to recognize and worship Him as One and Mighty God, that should be respected and revered at all times. We sometimes call this conciensce. Our deeds reflect our own consistency or divergence from this basic notion. Before God created our bodies, he created our souls and then took an oath from every soul to uphold the truth about God. When one denies the existence of God, that person basically goes against a very elementary cohesion between his body, mind and soul. Good deeds will bear fruits in the wordly life; i,e: the good doers will be rewarded with success and happiness. But true happiness will occur only in the latter life. Now to answer your other question, hell entails many degrees of suffering. Only the worst will be lumped with the likes of Hitler or the devil himself.

Indeed. I do not believe in God, however I am a good person. I give blood regularily, give to charities and fill my home with rescued animals. Would you say I am a sinner because I do not believe everything I am told?

When the day comes that somebody proves the existence of God, I will happily accept it. I do not however see why I should believe in something which has not been proven... no more than I feel pressured to believe in the abominable snowman.

EDIT: To Sister Christian: No offence, but rubbish! If God does exist, do you honestly think He would send a good person to Hell just because they wanted to make up their own mind about what's real and what isn't? I consider what you said total hypocrisy, because in saying that, you've insulted God yourself if you do believe in Him. Surely God is far more forgiving than that. If that is the first Commandment, are you saying that God places that above the importance of not murdering and hurting other people?

"God sees that as a sin" - who are you to know that? How arrogant are you to think you know what God would be thinking??

I'm sorry to be rude but I hate this "non-Christians are bad" attitude. God made ALL people, not just people in YOUR religion, and He gave us free will to make up our own minds. Tell me why did he do that?

If you don't believe in God, you have broken the first commandment. You might not see that as a grave sin; but God does.

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all." James 2:10

How do you think you have done with the rest of God's commandments? Take the Good Person Test at: http://www.livingwaters.com/good/

Not all Christian religions believe that. Some go by works, not by believing in Jesus. The term Christian is a very vague term. Any church with the basis of Christ is considered to be Christian.

You don't start life in a relationship with God and then move away. Unfortunately you start separated from God and then respond to Him throughout your life. It is this that matters. Circumstances suck but it is how you respond to them that counts.
