I just bought one and I really like it. At least a rating of 8 for now since I haven't explored all it's facets yet. There are a couple of upgrades beyone the sd600 but they didn't change that much to warrant the extra cost (a millimeter of extra LCD screen for $50.00) Mine had two manuals with it, a basic and an advanced. I think the battery meter is on the screen and you need to set the menu to show it or not. I'll double check that and write to you again later.

I really like Canon cameras. I have the Canon SD 700 IS, myself.
But I can tell you that the SD600 is a very good compact camera. Reviews of it have been very positive.
and the SD630 (which is identical to the SD600, other than having a larger LCD and minus an optical viewfinder) recently won a European award for "Best Ultra Compact", so it tells me that it must be good.
I really don't think there is a battery meter. Unfortunately you only get a short warning when the battery runs low, so you should always make sure you give the battery a charge a day before use (just in case).
I think the camera (regardless of it's limitations), scores about 8 out of 10.

I give it at least a 9 probably a 9.5. This is a great camera. I wanted to get a camera a couple of months ago because I was going on a trip to Alaska and I figured this would probably be the only time I ever get to go there I better get some good pictures. When you look at digital cameras you have three main things to consider in my opinion. You have features, which this camera has great features, however obviously not as many manual settings as Canon bigger cameras, but for a very thin small camera they still give you a lot of manual and macro options. Second you have pixel count. This is the mega-pixel rating of the camera, pretty easy to understand this one. This camera is 6 megapixel which is plenty at full resolution the pictures are like 2800 by 2400 pixels. Finally, in my opinion the most important is pixel quality. You can have a 10 mega-pixel camera, but unless the pixels the camera captures are quality and clear, you might as well have a 1 mega-pixel camera. This camera does a great job at capturing quality pixels. The auto focus helps a lot in that aspect. If you want a more professional opinion, go to cnet they have a good review of the camera. I conclusion, I love this camera, the pictures I took up in Alaska turned out great, by Graphic Designing friend is actually going to use some of the to decorate his house by getting some of them framed, and I'm definitely not a professional photographer. Also last thing, the customer service is great. The LCD screen on mine got a crack in it so I wouldn't work anymore, so I just sent it into Canon Repair center and that same week I received it back fixed, no charge and no questions about how it got broke. Highly recommend this camera.
