Well - as we all know - French men are chickens and will run from a fight and shake in their shoes when a girl says boo. French never saw a fight they couild not run from. They were sticking their tongues out at the "enemy" when someone said - it looks like they want to kiss and make up before the fight. Thus - the "French" kiss was born.

Because the English tended to name anything that was sexual after the French, because of their depraved continental ways. :) In the same way we have 'French letter' for condom.
Interestingly enough, the French do it in reverse. I believe their term for a condom is an 'English hat'.
