The person who said Beagles get taken to the pound more than any other dog obviously has never heard of pit bulls. Beagles are great dogs. I had one for 11 years. They have one of the best dispositions of any breed of dog. Extremely lovable and loyal.
That being said, they make the best pets for rural areas as some of them do tend to bark. They do need room to run, and also like to hunt.
Our beagle was a house dog, and didn't hunt at all, but not all of them are like that. Some need to hunt. It's instinct for them.
I'm not sure of any specific health problems. My beagle died of a throat condition at about 11 years, but I don't think it's a typical problem of the breed.
Good luck!

I've had different breeds of dogs all my life, but the last two have been beagles. Both were rescues as previous owners couldn't control them. Don't panic, - they calm down a lot as they get older, as pups up to 2 years, they just need lots and lots of exercise. They have a strong sense of smell and are very inquisitive dogs, they have to know exactly what is on top of the cupboards....behind the TV etc. They also need company, and are incredibly loyal to their owners.
In terms of health, the last beagle was a diabetic. They are prone to fat and you must watch their weight. The vet said beagles are 'well proportioned.... they have a good body design and can adapt well.' He was right. My dog lived till 14. I'm still missing him, which is why I started reading these pages! They are great dogs, and given the choice would choose another tomorrow.
Try beagle rescue first, that way you won't have the initial training to worry about. By the way, although I've heard lots of tales of beagles running away hunting, mine stayed close to their meal ticket....me!

My sister and her family had a beagle for just about 16 years. He was a great pet, very good with children, and got along with anybody who would pet him and pay a bit of attention to him. I think he was a pretty nice dog, and I'm really more of a cat person! As to breeders - I'm not familiar with breeders in the UK, but you might contact the American Kennel Club, and I'm sure they can put you in touch with breeders close to you, or you may know about a similar organization in England that can help you find a reputable breeder.

I've had beagles all my life and feel they are wonderful pets. Although, they are bred for hunting, it is extremely rare for one to be agressive in any way and we've never had any medical issues that were specifically related to the breed.
My dad had them for hunting dogs, but they were also pets. Our children have had two different beagles and both were absolutely perfect in size and temperment.
The down side to a beagle would be the same as any dog. They can be quite energetic, but they are very smart and train well.

My first one became diabetic & blind ,2nd became epleptic & deaf[she was to interbred],3rd still going strong at 15yrs old,4th was a rescue from Beagle Rescue not sure how old she was when she passed away but she was with me for 4 yrs, 5th unfortunatley she is allergic to something not sure what so back & forwrds to the vet.
I would not have swapped any of mine for all the tea in China.
Thet can be very lovable rouges you need to show them who's boss.
You will have to keep all food, rubbish out of beagles reach & belive me that can be far.
Be preapred to deal with an intelligent dog that once he or she sets out to do something they will try their hardest to achive it.
My first 2 discoverd how to get into the freezer eat the contants, then when I swapped the freezer door about it took them 1 day of watching me to get the hang of the new opening.
I will continue to keep beagles they are lovely.
Cant help with breeders try looking up The Kennel Club,or general search of Beagles on internet

AS with all breeds there are problems with HDs. You can look a list of HDs up on the AKC website for beagles. Down side. Yes. If you are getting this dog as a family pet with no real intentions of using it for hunting. I strongly suggest a different breed. It is in their heart the love of hunting. They bark a lot, They can run off and not come back when you call them once they are on a rabbits trail. But over all they are great dogs. Blessings and good luck.

Um I have trained dogs... Beagles get taken to the pound more than any other dog. They constanly bark and dig holes. If you can handle a dog that barks constantly, then get a beagle. They look cute but are difficult to handle and need lots and lots of attention.
Sorry to burst the bubble

Beagles are bred to have great stamina and a very keen sense of smell. This means that they are easily distracted and tempted to go walkabout. They also howl incessantly when annoyed or when they want to seek a mate.
On a positive note, they are really good with people and never aggressive. They do have to be watched with small animals as they love to chase and hunt.
