The best thing for you to do is start by learning an instrument. The piano would be ideal, but any instrument is fine. Find a music teacher that can teach you the basics of music theory.

Once you're past the basics....there are colleges all over the world that offer degrees in music theory and composition. Some colleges in the US include Belmont University, Berkley College of Music, and Juliard. These are all top music schools.

The rigors of a college music program is the best method for honing your composition skills. It will allow you the chance to surround yourself with other musicians and teachers and to focus your studies on music.

Anyways, I hope that helps.

I agree that the first step is to learn an instrument especially piano. learn the basics of music all of the terms. learn the rules of composition and music i.e. music theory in depth.

learn a lot of songs by memory that you really like. get so you can play them very well. then you can work on putting your favorite parts of the songs together like improv. you have been copying others ideas but you are writing music.

i would also suggest taking some sort of jazz instruction. it will expand your horizon and help you with chords and all types of scales. it really helps with your improvization skills.
hope this helps.

Study lots of music theory. There are a lot of web sites for this. Write music and play it back for other people to judge it. Write and study all the time and someday you will be a composer.
