There is no controversy-- Vogue magazine and the Associated Press went out to stir up a controversy and it still hasn't happened! Why would there be controversy when Black men and white women (and visa versa) have been with each other for years? I guess when you put a photo on a magazine for white teen girls, they are supposed to be so impressionable that they start running after Black men? I will say that it would have been nice to see the first Black man on the cover of Vogue in a suit, with or without the white female.

Tradition.
A drive through Golders Green or Hendon (in the UK) suggests that Jews do not always wear black. Visit any mosque and you will see that muslim men do not always wear white.
Are you trying to suggest that this is a "black and white" issue?
For Muslims there are some basic requirements to be modest, to be clean, not wear pictures of animate objects (people and animals) and not to wear things symbolic of other religions (eg crosses). The rest (including colours) I think is optional.
God knows best.

Regarding Muslim men wearing white; I think usually it's a cultural thing rather than a religious thing (Islam doesn't belong to one specific culture) BUT there is some advice which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave to men which is : ""Wear white clothes, for these are your best clothes, and enshroud your dead in them." (Reported by Tirmidhee). And also "Wear white clothes because they are the purest and they are closest to modesty; and shroud the dead in it.'' (Reported by An-Nas'ai and Al-Hakeem).
So if you're looking at it culturally, the reason they wear it may be just because it's what they're used to, but if you're looking at it from an Islamic point of view, it's possible they are following the Prophet's recommendation.

Most of the Jewish and Muslim people I've ever seen outside of tv dress pretty much like everyone else. I guess maybe among the ultra mega orthodox ones that's still done.

The Jews wearing black------you will find this only in the Orthodox movement. It is custom from European cultures, and shows no adornment and bringing attention to your clothing, saving yourself for the worship of G-d.

I am a muslim man (big surprise huh?) and I do not always wear white. There are 1.6 billion muslims in the world. They wear what suits them and the climate they live in.
And Allah knows best.
Peace and Blessings,
Salim

To enhance the sense of 'otherness'. Any religious dress as an outward show of allegiance to a faith is in effect a uniform, declaring that the wearer belongs to the 'elite' and chosen group.

Muslims wear white because it's darn hot in the desert. Have you ever been to Iraq? White keeps them cooler.
