I involved my children in cooking right from the start by initially giving each and everyone a task to do (chopping, etc) - this earned them points for privileges at the weekend. Soon they were helping me make stir-frys, curries, baking cakes.
Now they are so proud that they can help out in the kitchen. They learnt a new skill while enjoying themselves.

We started out with home-made pizza too. (as another said above)
From there they went into boxed cake and brownie mixes.
I don't think theres a real "secret" since every child is different. Some like to cook and some want nothing to do with it. Just ask them if there is something they'd like to try ....go thru a cookbook together.

Keep things simple and use plenty of colour. If there is something to look forward to at the end of it the child will remain interested and not quit halfway through, eg. start of with mini buns or fairy cakes and dinners like pizza, they have to be allowed to make a mess, it's no fun for them otherwise.

I encouraged my niece and nephew to get involved in cooking at a very young age. 3 and 1. I make a lot of brown bread so I would get them to stir the dough and grease the tin. I would put it in the oven and then we would try their efforts.

Competition - hold competitions for most adventurous meal etc cooked by children. Give them rewards for winning i.e. gold star. Have a points scheme up in the kitchen so children are aware of how they are doing.
Give them something to aspire towards

Get them involved in choosing food and deciding what to make. Make cookies with them. Anything quick and easy is popular at first and when they realise that is a success they will want to try more. As long as you can make it interesting and fun kids will want to be involved.

Start by buying those fake cooking utensils and food. Then slowly introduce the basic one like making noodles, frying an egg, making soup etc...They will get the kick out of it when you taste it and comment on their effort...

Make it fun. Get children's cook books and allow them to choose themselves what they would like to cook.
