I am not quite sure what price bracket you are in but if you are prepared to spend around £500 stg or approximately €700, I can recommend a real gem that will satisfy your photographic needs for a long time. About 1 year ago, I purchased the Fuji FinePix S9000. In actual fact, I bought this because I was in the process of adopting a child and wanted to record as many memories as possible relating to the event. The camera can take photographs at 9 megapixels. In layman terms that is above average quality but will also ensure that if you choose to enlarge your photographs that you will achieve a sharp quality image. I have used this camera for a year and while it has many advanced features, it can be used in a very simple manner. I have tried and tested this for a year. I have some superb images including many action photographs of kids and some impressive portraits. Anything is possible with this camera.
P.S. My wife you doesn't share my love of gadgets, really likes this camera and finds it very easy to use.......

In your shoes I would go for an SLR digital. I have a Cannon Eos 350D and its an amazing camera. Seeing as Cannon have just released the newer model - (400D I think) there should still be a few 350d's floating around at bargain prices. I can't imagine a regular digital camera (rather than an SLR) would have the shutter speed for taking the kind of shots you are talking about. Maybe you should have a look at Which? online which will give you good advice, or alternatively pop into a photographic shop or two.

I got a canon eos, pricey but good, and a fuji also quite good but most of it is down to the ability of the photographer rather than brand/model of camera, if you're looking at digital cameras the higher the resolution(in MP) the better. Also opt for one with an optical zoom, not just a digital zoom.

Get a Nikon D50. There is no delay between pictures at all and no delay between the time you press the button and the camera takes the picture. This is especially important and helpful when taking pictures of children. It has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes, including a "child" mode, that make it very easy to use, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. The "kit" lens is a decent lens optically, but you might want to upgrade to the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens. When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon.
Get a 1 GB memory card, such as the Sandisk "Ultra" for decent write speed.

Circuit City has it for $700, with the lens.

Walmart has it for $660.

The memory card will cost $50-60 or so, depending on sales or rebates.

Any DSLR these days has good resolution, pretty much no delay, and would fit the bill. Take your pick... Nikon Canon Olympus Sony Pentax they are all fine for the purpose you describe. I shoot a Nikon D3 but your budget might not extend to a professional grade camera... Even the entry-level DSLRs will have the features you require.
