What does syndicated mean when referring to the subculter or the 50' & 60's.?

For example legendary singer & songer writer Townes Van Zant had Syn. on the chollar of his shirt in his military school annual. From what I can gather this was to indicate there was more to his clean cut appearance than meets the eye. Please affirm or expand on this topic
