I want to listen to the pope's christmas message in st. peter's square. What time should I get there to get a?

... good place? Anyone know the best way of getting there and best place to stand? Bus or underground or what? I been told driving is a nono! Is the square actually closed in or does that kind of building thing round the sides have exits and entrances?
