The best way to take care of your voice is to keep your mouth shut and avoid singing, shouting and anything that might strain your vocal chords until the changes settle down.Breaking voices attract their share of jokes and comments and that is life, but it does not really take very long.Just hold your silence and be patient, then you will soon be able to talk like a man, instead of croaking and squawking.

Your voice will settle itself sometime within a year of the whole thing starting to change, as a general rule. How long it takes depends on how fast the maturation of your vocal cords goes. For what it's worth, it usually sounds worse to your ears than it actually is and your mom just doesn't realize how sensitive you are feeling about it at the moment. Not that it's right to tease you about it, but if you can find some humor in it, that will help ease matters for you a bit. So far as what you can do to make it sound nicer, about the only thing you can do is slow down your speech and concentrate on clearly enunciating your words. This will allow you a little more control over the vocalizations themselves. It won't prevent every break, but should help you cut them to a minimum. It tends to be worse if you get really upset or excited, or try to speak quickly. The vocal cords are in the process of thickening to give you the lower voice levels associated with men, and it just takes time to do it. As time passes, you will notice less and less breakage, and the vocal tone will modulate itself. You can't say exactly what tone you will be in the end, anything from tenor to bass is possible. You won't sound like a toad, though, I promise. If you want to practice, you can read aloud, by yourself if you like, and concentrate on lowering the pitch of your voice. That will give you an idea of what you are likely to sound like as time passes and your adult voice arrives. With a bit of luck, that day will arrive soon and you will be comfortable with your new sound.
