I have four kids and try to make sure they have appx 20 a piece. One is a major gift and the others support it or are other things that are under $20. Some are real inexpensive from $1 store and such. Ages 5,6,12,14. Too much?

I think so; it's not the quantity, it's the quality! I think 3 gifts are best; 1 "big" gift and 2 smaller gifts. It's an awfully big expectation that you are creating (for future signifcant others as well as when they are parents) and standard for them to keep as they get older.

One major gift, and NINETEEN that are under 20 dollars? If they're all a couple dollars a piece, no big deal. It's probably good that some are from the dollar store. But if you're talking like, CDs or things of that nature, it's probably too much. (How much is that costing you?)

My families spend roughly 100-130 dollars each year per kid, and that's what I do with my son, including candy, etc. I would make sure to spend the SAME amount on each kid so there's no argument. :o) (That's why my family does, otherwise the kids bicker!)

It all depends on what you can afford.

On Christmas Eve, our kids get a new hardback book and a pair of PJ's from mom and dad. The book is usually one they have checked out of the library over and over the past year.

On Christmas morning, Santa has left 3 bigger gifts under the tree (3 Wise Men) and filled up their stockings with smaller stuff. (candy, ornaments for the tree, trading cards, hair prettys, art supplies, stickers, socks, small toys, etc.)

Their birthdays are all in February and March, so we tend to take advantage of holiday sales and buy both Christmas and Bday gifts at once. We usually spend a total of about $500 on Christmas and birthday for all three kids.

IF you are happy, then I reckon thats fine. I have 3 kids and i usually give them about 10 each. Then together they get 1 mega gift. Usually an outdoor thing - one year it was table tennis. Another a trampoline. This year santa quite possibly will bring a water slide/bouncy castle. Fun. Merry Christmas to you. Theyre only young once so what the hey?

I don't really go by how many gifts. I just start looking for things I know they've been wanting. This year I set a budget and made a list. I finished shopping for them last week. But wouldn't ya know, I've found a bunch more things I think would be fun for them to have and I want to get them. I'm debating on it but I'll probably do it. Every year I say I'm going to go easy and I always go overboard.

I think so. I have 3 kids and get them 5-6 gifts each, plus family gifts. I want my kids to enjoy the holiday, but not get all caught up in "gimme gimme". Not to mention the fact that their rooms are already bursting with toys and we have to clean them out before holidays anyways.
My mom used to go overboard on gifts. She didn't have alot as a kid, so she overcompensated on us kids. Gifts don't equal love. And spoiling a kid won't make them a better person. Spend what you like, buy what you like. But think about why you buy the way you do before you get the gifts this year.

We have four children also, close to the ages of yours. What we do is set a spending limit, then each person buys a gift for each other person. Everyone recieves 5 gifts, all around the same price and then dh and I fill the stockings.

It's fun and it is nice to have them thinking of each other instead of themselves. Plus, if your kids are like mine, they have plenty of "stuff".

it is never too much when it comes to those sweet little things. my daughter is having her first xmas this year and i went on a major shopping spree because she is big enough to open presents. all of her presents are big and there are a few little ones. but i feel like as long as you have the money to get your bills paid and have the family taken care of, spend spend spend on those little rugrats.

No. It sounds to me like you are trying to have your children have a great Christmas, That is the kind of stuff our kids remember when they are older. At least I do. More power to you.
