One of the best alternatives to all types of tax is the expenditure tax. Do away with council, income and corporate taxes and have a flat 30% expenditure tax. True, prices will increase in the short term but so will the income and hence we will have a balance. Also, this will mean that immigrants & assylum seekers will also pay the full tax and hence will not run away with using the services without pay anything.

A form of Poll Tax would be better. It was set too high before and the public rejected it but its better than the Council Tax.

A couple living in a house now pay the same as the next door neighbours who could have six occupants. The house with six occupants produce more rubbish (refuse collection) and might use more local services such as libraries, sports facilities and schools. The couple are therefore paying over the odds for services not used.

Paying per person is fair - but whoever is in government would need to work out the average council tax now and divide by the average amount of people in a property then charge that per person I guess.

Nobody likes tax but we have to pay for the services we use. The only alternative is a local income tax but then you have a problem with the self employed and unemployed or those that work "cash in hand"

If you find the perfect answer - let Blair or Cameron know - it could save their political careers.
