In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Yes Satan does exist I have no doubt at all Jesus himself did not refute the existance of Satan
God created many spirit persons similar to himself. In the Bible these spirits are called angels. Also they are called "sons of God"(Job38:7;Psalm104:4 ; Hebrews1:7,13,14)God created them all perfect. Not one of them was a devil, or a satan. The word 'devil means slanderer and the word 'satan' means opposer.
The time however, came when one of these spirit sons of God made himself the devil, that is, a hateful liar who speaks bad things about another. He also made himself satan, that is, an opposer of God. He was not created that way, but later became that kind of person. To illustrate: A thief is not born a thief. He may have come from a good family, having honest and law- abiding parents and law-abiding brothers or sisters. But his own desires for what money can buy is what may have caused him to become a thief. How then did one of God's spirit sons make himself satan the devil?
The angel that became the devil was present when God created the earth and later the first human couple, Adam and Eve.(Job38:4,7) So he would have heard Gopd tell them to have children.(Genesis1:27,28) He knew that after a while the whole earth would be filled with with righteous people worshiping God.
That was God's purpose. However, this angel thought a great deal of his own beauty and intelligence and wanted to receive for himself the worship that would be given to God.(Ezekiel28:13-15 ; Matthew4:10) Instead of putting this wrong desire out of his mind, he kept thinking about it. This led to his taking action to obtain the honor and importance he desired.
What did he do? (James1:14,15).
The rebellious angel used a lowly serpent to speak to the first woman Eve. He did this much like a skilled person can make it seem as if a nearby animal or dummy figure is talking. But it was really this rebellious angel, the one called in the Bible 'the original serpent.' who was speaking to Eve. (Revelation12:9) He said that God was not telling her the truth, and was holding back from her knowledge that she should have.(Genesis3:1-5)This was a hateful lie and it made him a devil. He thus became an opposer of God or a satan. As you can see, it is wrong to think of the devil as a creature with horns and a pitchfork who oversees some underground place of torment. He is really a very powerful. but wicked angel, that is misleading the whole world(Revelation12:9) What better way could he find to mislead people than to get them to believe he doesn't exist ?His self appointed role that he plays is the role he took on when he got Adam and Eve to join him in his rebellion against God, because he wanted the worship that really belongs to God, and he did achieve some of that by false religion of which he is their God

Oh he exists alright! Don't ever discount his power of wisdom as the Bible describes him as being "full of wisdom" and perfect in beauty. For a full description of Satan turn to Ezekiel Ch.28 V.11-19 His role is to deceive as many as he can and take them to hell with him as Revelations tells us that he will eventually be cast into the lake of fire where he will remain forever. Satan is the arch enemy of the Lord and he is a liar and a murderer and is the most effective behind the pulpit where he can deceive many hence the huge importance of good solid Bible study.

Yes, I believe he exists because of all the evil in the world. His role is to deceive and destroy mankind before they can find the true way to God. Satan puts temptations in our path to divert us from following the will of God. People have free will to either follow the laws of God, or follow Satan into chaos and damnation.

Whoa, did I write all that?

Satan exists. Just look around you once in a while. But he is nothing in the light of Jesus.

Lucifer the Angel cast out by God(IE Satan) does exist. His roal is to "walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:"(1 Peter 5:8
) or basically take all the souls he can away from God. This is done by his decieving and demons(other fallen angels)

yes, I do believe he does, although I've never met him. I've read many stories about him, past and present, and I think that his role is to harvest as many souls as he can before his time expires. He doesn't know God's exact plan, but he is intelligent and organized, and has an artillery of weapons which he uses to trip us up, the best of which is to not believe he exists.

To God, however, he is but a gnat.

His aim is to destroy as many humans as he can, to this end he uses subterfuge, deception and the experience of thousands of years of cunning and posing as an angel of light. Since he cannot touch God, he aims to spite Him by leading as many away from God into self-chosen destruction as possible. Another reason is that we are slated to inherit the thrones from which these evil angels fell and so the hatred for us is immense among these spirits. It is interesting that even the polytheists who worship many gods call them "cunning", not knowing that it tallies exactly with the Christian understanding of who those god-posers are. He is an imitator and a roaring lion and not to be trifled with without God's protection.
