In Chinese writing, characters must be written with the strokes in the correct order, like left to right, top to bottom, etc.

YES, there are stroke orders to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters. There is no logical sequence like up to down or left to right, they are learned for each character.

Why a stroke order? That is another question and more difficult to answer, but it is quite important to the learner to learn the correct way to write them.

One end result is a similarity in people's handwriting, and many double and triple strokes are combined into one fluid stroke when writing things out longhand.

they are supposed to have an order, but it isn't really important how you write them, its like the Latin alphabet, people will tell you to write an A using certain strokes but it doesnt matter. They use an alphabet system unlike Chinese

Correct brush order makes the character look better. When you write fast if you don't use the correct stroke order, it won't be legible. It's easier to write when you use the correct stroke order (it flows better).
