No offense taken hon. You aren't asking in an offensive way :)
If I am wrong about being an atheist, and I stand before god, I will hold my head up. I'll say "I looked for you harder than anybody I know. I read the bible in its original languages. I prayed for hours and hours. If you know all, you know how sincerely I looked. If you can chuck me into hell, knowing that, then I go with a clear conscience. Because I wouldn't want to share eternity with a being who could torment ANYone for eternity. Let alone someone who looked for him so hard."
I would rather go to hell with a clear conscience and a pure heart than go to heaven because I chose out of fear.

That's called Pascal's Wager--Believing "just in case"--And it's cowardly. I think I'd rather stick to my beliefs.
No, I'm not afraid of being punished for trying to find truth. I live the best I can, my morals and ethics are clearly defined for me and very important to me. They also have nothing to do with fear of burning in hell. I do good things because I like to help people. Because it feels good.
If I am wrong about there being no gods and am punished just because I didn't follow blindly the words of a book that make little sense, then it is an unjust god (A tyrant) to punish an otherwise good person, and would have found an excuse to punish me for something anyway.

Of course I might be wrong, or I might do something wrong. But since I don't believe in a god, I don't believe that some eternal punishment awaits me for my mistakes. If I were afraid of hell, I'd be religious - not in an effort to do good, but because I believed in hell enough to be afraid of it.
Nothing happens if you're wrong and you get away with it. If you are wrong and hurt someone and get caught, you'll be punished - by the police.

I completely agree with black parade billie. If I die and am faced with a god, and the life that I have led isn't good enough for them then I guess I accept my fate. I really would not want to spend an eternity with a god like that anyway even though the other side is torture. I guess it would be a lose/lose situation.

Ok. I'm not being rude, but I'm just going to make some quick answers, because I'm tired of repeating myself.
1) No one knows if they are right or wrong. Until there is absolute proof from ANY side (bible and "feelings" aren't absolute), then everyone feels they are right. I am going with my belief there is no god.
2) When I die, there will be no white lights, no heaven or hell, no god, no devil...nothing. Just a casket and 6 feet worth of dirt on top of me.
3) I'm afraid of death, but I'm not afraid of the choices I make. Getting bent out of shape trying to figure out all the answers is wasting what little time I have in my one lifetime. I choose not to believe and move on with my life.
4) I haven't felt I was wrong since I became an Atheist (I was a Christian).
So really, your question is irrelevant, but I hope I answered it for you.

So if I die as an unbeliever I die, and if I claim to believe so that I don't die I am still an unbeliever and still die.
Reread Pascal's Wager and think about the hypocrisy it implies.
I am not wrong and you should be careful of emotional hooks. The religious are almost, but not quite, as good as Disney corp with them.

I am not afraid that I'm wrong and I'm not afraid of what is after death. You can't live our life in fear and that's what Christians do. They fear what comes next or that there isn't anything else after this, so they cling to the belief that there is something else out there that can take responsibility for everything that happens. It takes true fear to go that far to relegate responsibility to something or someone.
If I'm wrong, well then I'm just wrong. But I can't be afraid of that, either. I've got too much living to do.

If your God insists on punishing me because I don't believe in him because I refuse to take the word of a bunch of professional religionists and a moldy old book written by desert nomads in the early Bronze Age, then your god isn't worth worshipping is it?

To be afraid of god punishing one, you'd have to actually think that that creature exists. besides, do you really think that your GOD is going to chose some so-called born-again christian who molests his daughter, steal from his employer and sleeps with as many women as he can over another guy who doesn't believe in HIM but basically lives a decent, moral life and goes out of his way to help other people?

ZER0 C00L nailed it. Not to sound rude, but the question "What if you die and God will punish you?" means about as much to an atheist as the question "What if you die and Zeus will punish you?" means to you. Do you worry about other religions besides your own being the correct one? Probably not... and atheists are no different.
